heh. welcome to *my* world. tankgirl and morticia addams duke it out in my brain all the time.
basically, after "kill bill" -- well, to be honest the first half of it since i never was able to get all the way through it -- put the nail in the coffin for me re: terantino. i won't watch his films anymore. they're needlessly hyper-violent. as an extra-added bonus i have amputation issues. (this i found out after seeing "sin city" post operation. almost got sick in the theater. seriously. and i pride myself on my tough stomach or used to.) i can't even watch the previews, really.
Sadly, the conclusion to the duel's pretty much a given. Visceral always wins over elegant in my headspace. Needless hyper-violence is my middle name! Well, okay, not really. My middle name is Ann. It probably means 'needless hyper-violence' in SOME language, though.
The Tarantino half wasn't that bad at all, gore-wise. One scene, really. It was the Rodriguez half that had me squealing and putting my hands over my face. Which I NEVER DO, but it just seemed like the proper response. It was all so unrepentantly cheerful, like an eleven-year-old telling dead baby jokes. It really does depend for me on how it's played. Kill Bill (if I'm thinking of the scene you're thinking of, and I think I am) got close to my unnecessary threshold, but I don't know. The needlessness is so VERY necessary in Grindhouse. And I love me a good paradox.
But yes, if you've got issues with any of that, this movie is an utter lost cause. It's not like you can watch the edited-for-television version and get ANY sort of sense out of the mess. MAYBE the second half of the Tarantino one, with the knowledge that Kurt Russell's character is a murderous fuckhead.
