Head in a box! Head in a box on my DOORSTEP!

I am in awe of the powers of E-bay.

So the sans-culotte Halloween costume is a definite. I've got the coat partially done and a pair of stripey trousers and comfortable-but-still-sabot-y shoes and the makings of a bonnet rouge. Still have to pick up ribbons for a cockade and some nice drapey fabric so I can do something allegorical and Greek-like for a shirt. Who cares if no one will recognize what I am? They shall look upon me and think, 'Why is she wearing a red ski-cap?' and I will snicker deep deep inside.

As always, my choice in Halloween costume makes no sense to anyone but me. But but BUT. I'm filled with crit-dork glee. Being a girly crossdressed sans-culotte bestrides all KINDS of deconstructive lines - lines between righteous rebellion and terror, between allegory and gory reality, with the added feminist tweak of a female personification of an abstract (liberté! egalité! fraternité!) in a war where the boys were universally uncomfortable with the girls speaking out for THEIR rights. Too amused! And, well, I'm sick of hearing about politics and the rights and wrongs of war, so this is a bit of biting-my-thumb. Because it's NEVER simple. Relish the complexity, peoples.

Also? Check out my excellent severed aristo-head. They're ALL the rage this season.

we could get some great revolutionary point for scafoolds in places of the lower classes.

bwah! they do have that empty pedestal that once held mr. austin, you know. it's just SCREAMING for SOMEthing. and that spiky-texas-gazebo is certainly wide enough for a guillotine...
